In recent months we
have known several mistakes made in building facades. The last one has
taken place in a London skyscraper able to reflect the light and melt even a
vehicle.
The architect confessed they didn´t use all the necessary tools in their design and only they just estimated the temperature would be
of 32 degrees, finally being in some points of 72.
It’s difficult to understand how is it possible to design the skin of a
building without making a previous study and without taking into account the
different factors that take part in its design. The height, the geometry or the
orientation make each building a different work.
Simply if they would stop for a second to think about
the same meaning of 'skin' all these errors would have never happened: the skin
changes its thickness depending on the area that it is protecting. Its
thickness varies from 0.5 mm (on eyelids) until 4 mm (on heel).
In addition it acts as a protective barrier that
insulates the organism of the surrounding environment, protecting it and
helping it to keep intact its structure, at the same time it acts as
communication system with the environment.
For example if we take a hand, we can find in it
different zones, each one with a different thickness. First we detect these
points and then we draw the areas that surround them helping us with different
geometries.
One detected these points and areas, we use a simple
scheme realized through parametric design to give volume to this geometry.
Thus we can understand how is the response of the skin
in each point of the hand that we have analyzed and see how its thickness
changes depending on the area that is protecting.
This article only wants to be a call for reflection
about the importance of the skin in architecture. The skin should not ever be
the last element to consider.
