Sometimes we walk through cities or we visit
buildings that make us feel in a fiction film.
One of these buildings and
the starring one in this story, is the Nakagin Capsule Tower in Tokyo,
designed by Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa.
Although this work
has appeared in several fiction films set in a future rather distant, was built
in 1972 and is part of the movement known as Metabolism.
Metabolism was a Japanese architectural movement of
the postwar, had its first international exhibition in 1959 and unites the
concepts of mega structure and organic growth. The term "metabolism"
means specifically to synthesize
complex substances from a combination of simple substances.
In their statement they claim
that is a group in which each member proposes his designs about the
architecture of the future. Designs like the Capsule Tower, originally composed
by two towers, which may grow organically according to the future needs.
The capsules are fixed to the structure in
only four points to facilitate their replacement every 25 years.
However, the reality of the tower is quite
different, only between 10-15 people live in it and most capsules are
abandoned.
The city has lost its interest in it and they
intend to demolish it in order to sell their valuable squared meters, as it is
located in Ginza, a shopping area in the heart of Tokyo.
They have forgotten the principles this tower has been based in and this movement, there is not synthesis, formation, composition, but decomposition = trash.
It seems
that this film has not a happy ending and our Star will die in the
last scene.
